Tracking American Kestrel decline in northern Virginia

In the summer of 2021, I was awarded a research internship on a project studying American kestrels with the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in collaboration with the Clifton Institute. The goal of this project is to determine how kestrels use and move across their territories, in hopes to determine the cause of the decline of kestrel populations in the Piedmont region of northern Virginia. As a part of this project, I engaged with landowners in English and Spanish to gain access to kestrel habitat for vegetation sampling, bird capture events, bird observations, and movement data downloads. In addition, my personal photography was used in the American Kestrel GPS Tracking Application (developed by our collaboration of researchers) and in news articles covering the research project (see below).
